    Capital Financière agricole Inc. is a venture capital and private equity arm of La Financière agricole du Québec specializing in investments in startups, mezzanine, mid venture, late venture, emerging growth, turnarounds, middle market, mature, industry consolidation, Innovation, plant building or expansion, recapitalization, buyout, and growth capital transactions. It does not buy back the interest of existing partners. The firm seeks to invest in all sectors related to agriculture, including public and private agricultural and agri-food sector, primarily in food processing and commercialization projects; prepared and preserved foods; agricultural biotechnology; agricultural consulting services; agricultural machinery and equipment; machinery distribution, social organizations, agriculture industry software; and fertilizers and agricultural chemicals. It invests in companies with farm operators as associates, either as partners, suppliers or clients and whose projects are in agricultural production including products and services upstream and downstream agricultural production projects like marketing associations, processing or commercialization involving the agricultural sector or regional development, agriculture-based nutraceuticals and functional foods, agro-tourism excluding projects only comprising activities related to accommodations and the restaurant business, and biotechnologies at the commercialization stage in partnership with other funding bodies. Special attention is given to projects involving the production of food products and to initiatives targeting distribution networks for local specialty products and locally processed products. It could invest in competing companies and business recovery. The firm prefers to invest in companies based in the province of Quebec only. It prefers to make an equity investment between CAD0.2 million ($0.19 million) and CAD3 million ($2.32million). It backs investment projects between CAD0.5 million ($0.49 million) and CAD10 million ($9.78million), with investment per enterprise ranging between CAD0.2 million ($0.19 million) and CAD2 million ($1.96 million), and initial round of financing will be under CAD1 million ($0.98 million) and not exceeding CAD0.6 million ($0.59 million) for startup companies. It will be able to reinvest up to CAD3 million ($2.93 million) over the life of its portfolio companies. The firm prefers to invest in clients incorporated under the legal forms of joint-stock company, limited partnership, general partnership, or cooperative. For each of its portfolio companies, it seeks an active participation in the activities of either the board of directors as a director or observer or the management committee as a member. The firm participates in the form of capital stock or limited partnership shares, debentures which are not guaranteed loans, convertible to capital stock or not with possibility of an option to purchase shares. It seeks to take participating shares with voting of 10% to 30% with a maximum of 49%, and may also take preferred shares. The firm may co-invest with other investors. It typically holds its investments for seven to ten years after investment in startups and five to eight years in companies that are operational. The firm's source of capital is government money.
