Sahel Capital is a private equity firm specializing in emerging growth, buyout, and growth capital investments. It also makes fund-of-fund investments in private equity funds. It seeks to invest in agriculture, agribusiness, manufacturing, and the consumer goods sector. The firm avoids investments in start-up companies or Greenfields and only considers investments where the promoters and/or management team have demonstrated sector expertise by previously running companies within the same sector successfully. It seeks to invest in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with a focus on processors, logistics and storage; producers; input providers, as well as a secondary focus on intermediaries that extend financing to agricultural SMEs and farmers. The firm prefers to invest in sub-Saharan Africa, West African small and medium enterprises, with a focus on all regions across Nigeria. It typically invests between $0.3 million and $8.2 million in its portfolio companies. The firm makes use of quasi-equity investment instruments such as structured royalties, convertible notes, and redeemable preferred shares, along with commercial equity, convertible debt, and hybrid debt financing to SME’s. It prefers to hold board membership in its portfolio companies, including management and operational oversight and risk management. The firm also seeks to take a majority or minority ownership stake in its portfolio companies. It seeks to exit its investments in 10 years with three additional one-year periods. The firm also provides services such as management consulting, market research, and financial advisory. Sahel Capital was founded in 2010 and is based in Lagos, Nigeria with additional offices in Lagos, Nigeria.
