How the platforms differ
OpenVC was built to solve one specific problem: helping founders find the right investors without paying for expensive databases. It does this well β 20,000+ verified investor profiles, filterable by stage, sector, geography, and check size, with the ability to submit your pitch directly to investor inboxes from within the platform. For founders at the very start of their search, OpenVC is a genuinely useful free starting point. CAPLINK includes an investor database with comparable filtering and direct outreach capabilities as part of a broader platform.
OpenVC includes a basic CRM and pipeline view for tracking outreach progress β enough to stay organized during early-stage investor research. It is not designed to be a full fundraising CRM: there is no connection to a data room, no investor update tool, and no cap table. CAPLINK's CRM is connected across all platform features, so every investor touchpoint β data room access, update opens, in-app messages, pipeline stage changes β feeds into the same investor record.
OpenVC does not include a data room. Once a founder has identified interested investors through OpenVC, they typically need a separate tool for document sharing during due diligence. CAPLINK includes a full data room with per-investor access rights, dynamic watermarking, view tracking, and automatic expiry β connected to the investor's CRM record and pipeline stage, so document engagement is visible alongside all other investor activity.
OpenVC does not include an investor update tool. Keeping investors informed after initial contact β whether during a live raise or as post-investment communication β requires a separate tool if you use OpenVC. CAPLINK includes investor updates as a native feature, addressed to investors already in the CRM, tracked, and linked to their profiles.
OpenVC allows founders to submit their pitch directly to investor inboxes from within the platform β up to 1 investor per day on the free plan, and up to 5 per day on the premium plan. This is a form of structured direct outreach, though it is limited in volume and format. CAPLINK allows founders to contact investors directly within the platform via in-app messaging, in addition to standard email, without per-message volume limits tied to a pricing tier.
OpenVC does not include a cap table. CAPLINK includes a live cap table connected directly to the fundraising process: founders can model a new round against their current ownership structure while investor conversations are active, and share a live cap table view with advisors or lead investors during due diligence. For founders who have moved past the discovery phase and are managing active investor conversations, the cap table becomes a practical tool rather than a separate concern.
