The Largest VC Firms in Portugal

Leading venture capital firms in Portugal, ranked by reported assets under management (AUM). Discover the most active local VCs and unlock full profiles to reach out.

    Capital Landscape

Portugal's venture capital market sits at an earlier stage of maturity compared to Northern European hubs like the Netherlands, Sweden, or France, yet it has grown meaningfully over the past decade. The country's largest funds by AUM tend to cluster in the range of several hundred million euros, with only a handful of managers commanding portfolios above that threshold. This concentration at the top is notable: a small number of funds account for a disproportionate share of total institutional venture capital deployed domestically.

The market's development has been shaped significantly by European structural funds and programmes channeled through national promotional institutions, which has meant that sovereign-backed and quasi-public capital plays a larger role here than in more mature Western European ecosystems. This dynamic has attracted some pan-European managers to establish a local presence or make dedicated Portugal-facing allocations, gradually diversifying the funding landscape beyond domestic managers.

Compared to Spain, its Iberian peer, Portugal's aggregate AUM in venture and growth capital remains smaller in absolute terms, though the ratio of venture investment to GDP has been closing the gap. The startup ecosystem anchored in Lisbon, with Porto as a secondary hub, has generated enough deal flow and exits to sustain credibility with international limited partners. However, ticket sizes from even the largest domestic funds remain modest by Western European standards, meaning that Portuguese startups scaling beyond Series B often need to engage non-domestic capital. The overall picture is a market that has moved past pure nascency but has not yet reached the density or liquidity of Europe's top-tier ecosystems.

    Notable Fund Archetypes

    Sovereign-backed and quasi-public venture funds

These funds are capitalized wholly or partially by national development institutions or EU structural programmes. They prioritize economic development mandates alongside financial returns, often operating across stages and sectors with a remit to stimulate the broader Portuguese innovation ecosystem.

    Sector-agnostic multi-stage domestic managers

Generalist managers with Portuguese headquarters that invest from early stage through growth, typically concentrating on Lisbon and Porto-based companies. They leverage deep local networks and often serve as lead investors in rounds that subsequently attract international co-investors.

    Deep-tech and science-based specialist funds

Funds focused on university spinouts, engineering-intensive businesses, and applied research commercialization, drawing on Portugal's engineering faculties and research institutions. They often have longer hold periods and maintain close ties to academic and R&D ecosystems.

Pan-European funds with Iberian or Southern Europe mandates

Larger European managers that allocate a defined portion of their fund to Portugal and Spain combined, treating the region as a single investment geography. They typically enter at Series A or beyond and bring cross-border network value alongside capital.

    Corporate venture capital arms

Strategic investment vehicles affiliated with large Portuguese corporates or multinationals with a Portuguese operational base. They focus on startups whose technology or business model complements the parent company's core business, often offering commercial partnerships alongside investment.

    Growth and late-stage crossover funds

Funds targeting companies that have achieved product-market fit and are scaling revenue, frequently co-investing alongside international growth equity managers. In Portugal this archetype remains nascent but is growing as the first generation of scaled startups matures and requires larger cheques.

    How to Approach These Funds

Founders approaching the largest AUM-tier funds active in Portugal should understand that warm introductions carry significantly more weight here than in larger, more anonymous markets. The Portuguese institutional investment community is compact, and partners at the leading funds typically know one another, know the major angel networks, and know the ecosystem accelerators well. An introduction from a credible portfolio founder, a trusted angel, or a programme manager at one of the national innovation agencies will materially increase response rates and the seriousness with which a pitch is received.

Stage fit is a practical first filter. The largest domestic funds tend to focus on seed through Series A, occasionally leading Series B rounds for their strongest portfolio companies. Founders at pre-product or pre-revenue stage should generally target the angel and accelerator layer before expecting meaningful engagement from institutional managers at this tier. Arriving with early revenue traction, a clear understanding of the total addressable market in European or global terms rather than just domestic terms, and evidence of repeatability in customer acquisition will align with what these funds need to justify deployment to their own limited partners.

Portuguese fund managers at this level also pay close attention to team composition and founder resilience, partly because the local talent pool for scaling operations is smaller than in larger markets and partly because the path to an exit often requires navigating international expansion. Founders who can demonstrate an existing connection to markets beyond Portugal, whether through prior work experience, co-founders, or early customers, tend to generate stronger conviction.

Finally, patience with process is advisable. Decision-making at funds with public or institutional LP bases may involve investment committees with longer timelines than pure private partnerships. Building the relationship over multiple conversations before a formal raise, rather than arriving cold with a live round, is the standard that fits how these funds actually operate.

    Canaan Partners logo
    Canaan Partners
Canaan is an early-stage venture capital firm that invests in visionaries with transformative ideas. While we love speedy success, we're acutely aware that greatness comes in many forms and at different times. That's why we're not afraid to break the mold to bring something spectacular to life. Our approach is personal. We don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach, but there are a few absolutes intrinsic to who we are and how we work. And these values weren’t contrived out of thin air, they’re hard earned over the past 30 years and counting. 01 High performance, low ego. The old adage “actions speak louder than words” rings true within Canaan’s walls, and in our interactions with companies out in the wild. Words like "understated" and "effective" are often used to describe our partners, and that’s fine by us. We’ll leave the bragging to the others. “Seasoned investors can be very arrogant, but Canaan is no BS, unassuming, and humble—no hysteria, no angst.” — Michael Gilman, CEO Arrakis 02 People are more than statistics. A diverse team means we bring varied perspectives to the table. And that table welcomes out-of-the-box thinking, spirited debate, and people from all walks of life. It’s our individual backgrounds and interests that inform our collective approach, which spans industries, generations, and coasts. In short, our diversity is who we are and what we do. 03 We ask for help, and so should you. We firmly believe that two heads are better than one. So while our investors thrive in 1:1 partnerships, our companies also have the support of the entire Canaan team whenever, wherever. Recruiting your executive team? We’ll mobilize our full network. Need operational advice to bring a product to market? We’ll connect you with the right partner or colleague. Our resources are yours. “Even if Canaan hadn’t funded us, just going through the process with them – the discussions we had and the questions they asked – already made us a better company. And that’s amazing.” — Julie Wainwright, CEO The RealReal 04 The Golden Rule still applies. We treat you like we treat ourselves—with respect, transparency, and honesty—even if it’s sometimes not what you want to hear. It’s this approach that makes our portfolio companies more like family, because we’re not afraid to get in the weeds and help solve big hairy problems. In fact, it’s what we live for. We’re acutely aware that our success hinges on your success, so we do what it takes. “We made big strategic shifts as a company and worked closely with Maha through all of them. Canaan is really smart about the way they get involved and how they support you through good times and bad.” — Kevin Chou, former CEO Kabam 05 We're in the know, not in the way. We’d be lying if we said we weren’t hands-on, but we also know when to step back and let you soar. Our goal is to add value to your process, and help you grow in ways you couldn’t alone. That’s why you’ll never see us booking meetings just to check a box or “see how are things are going.” We’ll already know, because that’s the kind of relationship we have with our companies. Balance, diversity and passion are at the core of who we are. Meet the hardworking people who defy convention, shatter glass ceilings, and take companies to the top — all with a unique style and a healthy dose of humor.
